Campaign for Jobs
The Campaign for Jobs is Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 104’s membership mobilization program to build our Union culture, strengthen our local communities through acts of service, and to secure future work opportunities through Project Labor Agreements. Each event we have is called an “action”, and focuses on members coming together to support our Union efforts.
Strengthening Our Local Communities
One example of a Campaign for Jobs Action is through acts of service in the community.
On December 14th, 2017, over 15 Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 104 members came together to help out the small community known as Camp Bartlett outside of Ojai following the devastating fires in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. The infrastructure was in critical condition, with half of the homes in the community lost due to the fire. Our members volunteered their time making temporary repairs to allow residents to access their water tanks, cleared tons of wood and debris, and were able to have a positive impact in one of the many communities that were severely impacted.
Securing Future Work
Making sure development projects have labor standards is a critical component to the well-being of our Union. We have a variety of Campaign for Jobs Actions focused on development projects, including attending city council meetings, helping get working family champions elected into office, and rallying in support of a local workforce! One such example of this took place on August 30th 2017, where 30 Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 104 members attended the annual “Meet Our San Mateo County Elected Representatives” held in Burlingame. The event was hosted by the San Mateo Building and Construction Trades Council, where our members met face-to-face with our elected school board, city, county, and state leaders. It was a great opportunity for Local 104 members to discuss items such as upcoming construction projects, work opportunities, Project Labor Agreements, apprenticeship programs, and local community concerns.
Get Involved
The Action Committee is an active group within the Union that is voluntary to participate in for those interested in helping go beyond just coming out to Actions. The Action Committee is responsible for driving the area’s focus on which cities we want to spend time improving, which projects we want to focus our efforts on obtaining under a Project Labor Agreement, and for bringing election endorsements forward to Local 104’s Executive Board and ultimately onto the Membership.

Women’s Committee
The Women’s Committee of Sheet Metal Workers’ Local Union No. 104 was established by Local 104 female members to help with recruitment and retention within the Unionized Sheet Metal Industry. The construction industry is notorious for prejudices, and it’s the Union who fights for and protects ALL workers. Local 104 is a Union where we pride ourselves on diversity and we strive to always be progressive and forward-thinking in our industry. There is immense value to having a diverse workforce, and the Women’s Committee is a vital group to strengthening our Union that all members are welcome to participate in.

Member Hardship Fund
Tragedies unfortunately happen in our lives unexpectedly and often can create a financial hardship for us if we aren’t expecting the hardship. In the fall of 2015, the members of Local 104 passed the collection of a hardship fund for members and their families in times of great need.
To be considered for a benefit from the Hardship Fund, please request an application by emailing hardshipfund@smw104.org or calling (925) 314-8600. Here are a few excerpts from the Local 104 Member Hardship Fund Manual:
Purpose
Established in 2015, the purpose of the Local 104 Member Hardship Fund is to provide benefits to members facing an extraordinary hardship to assist them with short term expenses.
Eligibile Expenses/Member Eligibility
Although Local 104 cannot anticipate every need, some examples of potentially eligible expenses include: nursing care or travel costs following a serious illness, injury, or accident; rent, mortgage, or tuition payment assistance during a period of extraordinary unemployment, necessary durable medical equipment not covered by the Health & Welfare Trust (such as a walker or a wig for a member or dependent going through chemotherapy); or assistance with short-term living expenses following a fire or other disaster affecting a member’s home.
The Local 104 Member Hardship Fund is open to all Local 104 members, except officers and employees of Local 104. To request a benefit from the Hardship Fund, the member must be presently experiencing a significant hardship.
A significant hardship is defined as a temporary, sudden, and extreme situation that causes extraordinary financial need, including but not limited to: out-of-pocket medical or disability-related expenses of the member or a dependent, extraordinary expenses relating to natural disaster, act of God, or accident, or the disability, illness, or injury of the member or a dependent; or extraordinary expenses relating to the member’s extended unemployment or military deployment.
Confidentiality
The application and review process is confidential. The Hardship Fund Committee will review applications blind, meaning that the Hardship Fund Committee will not have access to the member’s name and/or other identifying information.
